 American Hot Wax (1978)

A cult film classic never released on DVD, American Hot Wax is the true story of disc jockey Alan Freed, who introduced rock and roll to American radio audiences in the 1950’s. Freed was a source of great controversy: criticized by conservatives for corrupting youth with the “devil’s music”; hated by racists for promoting African American music for white consumption; and persecuted by law enforcement officials.

In addition to spinning records as a DJ, Freed emceed a string of legendary stage shows at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre, which many consider to be the birthplace of rock concerts, that featured performers such as Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, The Drifters, The Platters, and Jackie Wilson among others, that was heard nationally on CBS radio. In 1957 ABC-TV gave Freed his own nationally-televised rock & roll show, but an episode on which singer Frankie Lymon danced with a white girl enraged ABC’s Southern affiliates and the show was cancelled. Freed also appeared in a number of pioneering rock and roll motion pictures: Rock Around the Clock, Rock, Rock, Rock, Mr. Rock and Roll, Don’t Knock the Rock, and Go, Johnny Go!.

Freed was finally brought down by the payola scandal (record companies paying DJ’s cash or giving them gifts to ensure radio airplay for their artists). Freed was subsequently arrested and pleaded guilty to accepting payments. He was blacklisted from broadcasting and died broke and bitter in 1965. In spite of everything going bad for Freed, American Hot Wax gives a great look at the magical early days of rock and roll.

Features performances by Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie Ford, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and the Brooklyn Dreams performing as Kenny Vance and The Planotones.

Starring Tim McIntire, Fran Drescher, Jay Leno, and Laraine Newman.
